PROXIMATE
A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux
the optimist says it’s half human
the pessimist says it’s half monster
and the project manager says, “when can we ship it?”
PROXIMATE is a dread-driven narrative game where you investigate a deep sea laboratory and piece together the events that lead to the research team’s demise.
You'll be required to wear an image recognition visor that only tells you the bare minimum information you need to succeed — and sometimes less. Use text information, proximity data and audio clues to form a mental map of your surroundings and pray that your technology won't fail you when you need it most.
// Features
- There is no monster.
- Assignment timeboxed to 90 minutes. If you’re here longer than that, we might have to dock your pay.
- Your visor says that the red stain on the wall is ketchup. It was coded by some very smart people, so you should definitely trust it.
- Collect chat logs from the research team, but don't read into them too much. We're not paying you to figure out some kind of sinister mystery here.
- I mean, we haven’t seen the monster. So it’s probably not there.
- Receive helpful calls from your manager, voiced by Luke Austin, who's here to make your job easier. Probably.
- Connect with a cast of queer characters, who we definitely cared about and will miss dearly. Oh hey, can you fill out this survey real quick?
- If you hear it, turn away.
// The Story
After labor rights movements sweep large parts of India and Southeast Asia, companies around the world lose their supply of cheap exploitable workers. Melbourne-based tech company Neuras decides to attempt the impossible: installing AI drives into the freshly dead to create a cheap and endless supply of workers.
After a year of disappointing results, the Neuras lab suddenly cuts all contact with their investors. You, a contractor for the country's largest investment firm, have been tasked with investigating the lab and recovering the firm's rightful IP. But it's the firm's other investment project -- a sonar-based image recognition visor -- that might end up being your bigger problem.
That, and the breathing you keep hearing behind the door.

This was stunning. Thank you for an awesome experience.
thank you so much! so glad you liked the game <3
Hello!! I was trying to find a way to reach out to you about showcasing a demo of Proximate at an event I'm organising, but couldn't find an email to contact you! Apologies for commenting here, as I don't have a Mastadon account at the moment!
hi! you can reach me at contact@cainmaddox.com <3
Wowwww that was mega stressful. Just like Iron Lung but uhh different? worse? Awesome :)
Great idea, but I couldn't get beyond any of the three doors in the lobby. I could only interact with the Console, Airlock and Reception(?)
full version of the game now released! :)
Looking forward to the rest of it! Terrifying! Never want to see mince beef (delicious) and ketchup (atrocious) next to each other!
Incredible talk at Parallels! <3
This :)
thank you so so much!!!! <3 <3 <3
The place the cursor seems to be doesn't match up with where the game thinks it is as far as the computer menu goes. Makes it pretty tricky to use. Great concept so far! looking forward to future versions.
ooh thanks for spotting that! can i ask what resolution your screen is?
1920 x 1200 I think!
is there jumpscares?
not in the demo, but there's going to be sudden noises and chase scenes in the full game
Incredible idea, really looking forward to see what else get's added!
thank you so much! <3
This is super cool, Please make it so escape doesn't just quit the game, I have muscle memory that that is "pause" lol
i will! building out a proper menu for the next release :)
I love this so far. The demo really showcases exactly the mechanics and writing that I was excited about when I heard about this! I am beyond excited to play the full game.
(In the future, will there be an option to use the system mouse or enlarge the cursor? I sometimes found it difficult to find my mouse on the screen--though I love the aesthetic of it!)
thank you so much!! yep, others have also mentioned the cursor being too small so i'm going to rework it for the next build
This is a great idea, and really creepy. I'm not sure how far I was supposed to be able to get - (some sort of hint section on this page would be useful, in case players miss anything)
thank you! :) at the moment only the submarine and lobby are available - so you can't go any further than the room with the reception. i'm working on building out more content!
The blind terror of playing this on the Apple Vision Pro would be quite spectacular I think.
true, playing it on virtual reality would be terrifying
Really really fucking cool idea, and amazing execution and atmosphere so far! Super excited to see this develop, it's already really unnerving haha
Quick point of feedback, Recreation is spelled as "Recreaction" on the downloading map.
thank you so much!! and good catch on the typo lol, will fix that :)
The version I played said "map.png was missing or corrupted" when I tried to download it, but I assumed this was part of the game...
yep, the player's map will be corrupted intentionally but the one in the console will always be there
